TOUR DU MONT BLANC MTB ROUTE:
The Tour du Mont Blanc is the circumnavigation of the Massif du Mont Blanc. Its a spectacular ride passing glaciers, crossing high mountain passes and traversing the frontiers of France, Switzerland and Italy. With a large amount of tracks in each valley there are many variations possible. It can be ridden half on road - half on track - fully on road - fully on track. Take care on some of the mountain tracks on steep slopes. A fall here may have serious consequences. Take a map of the Massif for reference, a bike repair kit and warm clothing. This is alpine riding and the expect all weathers.
Starting from Chamonix: Day 1: Chamonix - Refuge Nova. Take the Balcon Sud south towards Les Houches, then head across town to the Bellevue cable car. Take the cable car to the top station then ride down to the Col du Voza. From here drop down into the Bionnassy valley which in turn heads out into the Contamines valley. Once in the Contamines valley continue heading south to the Col du Bonhomme. This trail is unridable at the top. Likewise the descent from the Col du Bonhomme is very technical. Either take the walking track to the left, or heading right down the valley to the road that eventually leads to Lake Rosental. At Lake Rosental head towards La Chapieux on road. This heads up a steep col (La Culaz) and spend the first night in the Refuge de la Nova. Day 2: Refuge Nova - Refuge Elena. Starting from the Refuge de la Nova head east up the valley to the Col de la Seigne (2516m). This track is pretty tough and becomes unrideable 200m - 300m from the top of the col. The view from the top is incredible. From the top of the Col de la Seigne head down the walking track. It is tough but rideable, eventually becoming a 4x4 track that travels along the base of the Val Veny. On past the immense glaciers of the Miage and the Brenva. The 4x4 track terminates in Courmayeur. Take the road that leads up into the Val Ferret in Italy, which soon turns into a 4x4 track and winds its way up to the Refuge Elena (2062m). Day 3: Refuge Elena - Champex. Behind the Refuge Elena is a walking track to the Grand Col Ferret (2537m). It is unrideable (90mins on foot). From the top of the col the track heads down into Switzerland. It is tough riding on a steep track. The track upgrades to a 4x4, descending to the village of Ferret. Either descend to Martigny or take the track that heads to Champex on the left side of the valley. Day 4: Champex - Chamonix. From Champex continue on mtb tracks to the Col de la Forclaz. From the col it is possible to ride by road to La Jeux. To get there take the only left turn off on the road to the frontier. In La Jeux the road turns into a 4x4 track and is easily rideable all the way to the Col des Posettes back in the Chamonix valley. From the top of the col head down the 4x4 track to the village of Le Tour, then either take the Balcon Nord or the road back to Chamonix. |
