A 2 week splitboard mountaineering holiday in the Tyrol was the plan, but poor weather and bad luck
stood in the way (plus closed huts!).
Week 2. Otzal Classic High Level Route.
Starting at Obergurgl, finishing at Huben this high-level route is considered a classic, popular with German and Austrian ski-tourers.
Day 1. Obergurgl to Karlsruher Hut (2430m).
After a days rest we moved to the Otzal valley and left the car at Hochgurgl.
From Obergurgl we ascended a few lifts, then skinned past the Schonweis hut to the Karlsruher hut.
Day 2. Ascending the Langtal valley.
Day 3. Surfing below Eiskogele
Day 2. Karlsruher hut to Annakogel and back to hut.
Found out the next hut (Hochewilde) was closed so our plans were scuppered.
Decided to ascend the Langtal valley and glacier (keeping to the right to avoid crevasses)
to the col below Annakogel (3333m) and Hohe Wilde (3458m). Surfed back down to the hut.
Day 3. Karlsruher Hut via Eiskogele to Obergurgl.
Climbed towards Hochebankbenkamm and ascended Eiskogele (3233m).
After an initial steep section surfed down the Hangererferner
on perfect snow, before nearly setting off a few avalanches near Rotmoostal.
Finally hit the pistes and a well earned drink at Obergurgl.
Rest of Week. The week turned warmer and the avalanche risk was too great,
so we stayed at the Gasthaus Bergfriede in Huben and surfed at the nearby resorts - Solden, Obergurgl, Saint Anton, Lech.
