Grimentz
Having bought a Voile Split Decision snowboard last summer, it was time to use it.
Destination: Swiss Alps Valais region.
After a leisurely trip over the Jura and along Lake Geneva, found a cheap Auberge near
Grimentz. First trip on the new board proved to be a long epic day past Point de Lona and around
Sex de Marinda.
The weight of my sack caught me unawares and the Les Crets pomas were troublesome!
The day was warm and the snow like sugar, we set off a couple of avalanches near Lona, skinned
to the col below Marinda and then boarded down to Lac de Moiry.
Point de Lona (and avalanches), Grimentz
Grand Desert from Rosablanche (3336m)
The going was slow, and the road to Grimentz full of avalanche debris. We found ourselves
surfing in the dark and finally arrived back at the car by 10.30pm!
Saint Bernard/Liddes
After a night in a hotel at Liddes, took the postbus to Bourg Saint Bernard
and skinned up to the Grand Saint Bernard monastery. The hospice is popular with ski-tourers
and had dortoirs with mattresses.
Next morning we attempted to skin up Mont Fourchon
with a friendly catholic priest, but the weather closed in so we turned back.
Weather still bad the following morning so we boarded back down the road and had a half day
at La Fouly.
Moved our belongings to Hotel Terminus, Orsieres and decided the next days trek
would be Rosablanche (3336m) from Verbier.
